A Brief Course in Making Stories Brief
by Doug Lipman
No matter where or how you tell stories, the most valuable stories you have include the very short ones—one or two minutes long.
Why? Because these very brief stories are most likely to be widely heard. They are most likely to introduce you to new audiences and to lead directly to new bookings. In short, they are like money in the bank.
Of course, if you tell in sales—including selling your own services—you know that a great, brief story can easily be worth tens of thousands of dollars in increased revenue.
Missed Chances
Have you ever been called by a radio or TV reporter and given the opportunity to expose a wide audience to your work - but with the proviso that your sample has to be two minutes or less?
If so, you probably have wished that you already had taken this course. Because, unless you had a highly polished brief story in your pocket, you missed a chance to move your career up a notch.
Whether on the phone, on the radio, or in person, high-quality brief stories can literally make you as a storyteller. They are like jewels. You can spend years looking for them, and never "find" any!
Why? Well, part of the reason is that we don't spend the time developing them until the reporter says, "Can you give us a sample?" And then it's too late.
Be Prepared for Opportunity!
On the other hand, if you have the stories ready before the reporter calls, you are sitting pretty.
Whatever you invest now in these stories, they will repay you many times over throughout your storytelling career.

"A discovery and an awakening!"
"Having Doug coach me on my 1-minute stories was a discovery and an awakening. What an exciting way to work on the craft of storytelling! I'd recommend this course to anyone serious about becoming a better storyteller.."

What You Will Learn
In this 4-session telephone and web course, you'll learn (in pithy, 5-minute lessons) the keys to shrinking stories without dessicating them, including:
- How to shorten your story while retaining its power.
- How to know which details to keep.
- When to make up something new to replace lots of the old.
- How to be a coaching buddy committed to ruthless editing without becoming a ruthless coach.
- When to make a story longer so you can then make it shorter.
- A quick threestep process for compressing a story in a hurry.
- When to give up on making a particular story fit into 1 minute.
Everyone in the course will get a turn to be coached on a 1-5 minute story during one of the conference calls.
Plus, you'll each get a turn to tell and record a story on the phone to a partner after every class, and then you'll get appreciations and suggestions from the other class members—and from me—on your recorded story.
When you sign up, you'll also get a certificate for one free 30-minute private coaching call with me, to use after the course is over - to solve any remaining problems, or just for working on more stories of any kind!
When We Will Meet
This course will meet four times during May and June, 2008. Class meetings will be held via conference call every other week, starting the first full week in May.
Our classes will be held on weekday mornings or afternoons. To determine exactly which days and times, I'll send you a survey after you register. Then I'll make a course schedule that seems convenient for everyone. If, at that point, you find the actual schedule inconvenient, I'll refund your tuition.
In between these classes, you'll "meet" via phone with 4 other members of the course (one member after each class) to tell a story. Your recorded story will be recorded and automatically uploaded to the course website, where other course members will have a chance to listen and comment on it.
If you have to miss a class, don't worry: each class will be recorded and posted on the course website, where you'll be able to listen to it at your convenience.
The class website will also have forums, a journal, and other means for you to interact with other course members, ask questions as they come up, etc.
The “Refund Plus” Guarantee
After decades as a successful teller and coach, I am so confident that you will learn from this course, that I promise that you'll be pleased with the knowledge you'll gain from this it, as well as with my coaching of you and your interaction with the other students.
If you're not fully pleased, I'll refund all of your tuition and even pay you $100 from my own pocket, as a compensation for having wasted your time!
Not only do you register at no risk, your worst possible outcome leaves you with a $100 profit!
